DESCRIPTION: English I presents strategies that will help students learn how to become successful readers and how to use English language conventions effectively. Information about reading, fluency, vocabulary, and language is presented in every Unit so that students can continue to work on their fluency and build upon their existing reading and writing skills as they progress through the course. Providing rich media in multiple formats for ease of use and to address diverse student needs, this course reflects a bias-free and multi-culturally sensitive environment.

DESCRIPTION: The main purpose of this class is to read novels, short stories, poetry, and plays that introduce literary terms and devices. It is additionally designed to help students understand the rules of composition while also broadening their vocabulary. Language mechanics and writing techniques will be enforced throughout the year with an emphasis on use and context to build proficient language skills. The students will be improving their communication skills, understand the elements of fiction, poetry, and drama, apply their language skills in both a written and oral sense, have a mastery of reading comprehension to where they understand the entire story, and knowledge of authors and their contributions to the body of literature.

DESCRIPTION: English III is a rigorous college preparatory course designed to continue preparing students for college. Students read novels, short stories, drama, poetry, and nonfiction works and analyze literature in terms of theme, devices, and author’s point of view. They draw inferences, understand historical influence, and consider philosophical stance. They expand their vocabulary and listening and speaking skills within the context of literature. They demonstrate research techniques and an ability to write with an understanding of audience and purpose. Over the course of a year, they produce a variety of writings including reading logs and journals, character studies, speeches, creative pieces, and compare and contrast, analytic, expository, narrative, reflective, persuasive, and research essays.

DESCRIPTION:Senior English is a one year college-prep course in Language Arts. This course engages students in both reading and writing and encompasses a variety of styles, authors, genres and cultures. Throughout the year, students will read novels, short stories, poetry and other professional documents which focus on British literature. The curriculum strictly follows the California State Standards through writing, reading, oral presentations, speaking and listening. This course is also designed to prepare students for college level English literature and composition classes.
